The Spaces app allows you to map your space. Mapping your space allows your device to localize content by recognizing positional data and architectural features in a given area. Spaces can be mapped and store locally, or shared via an AR Cloud instance.
Using Spaces
To map a new space, or to load an existing one, open the "Spaces" app. There are two tabs you can use - "Shared Spaces" and "Local Spaces". Shared Spaces is only available for users with a Developer Pro or Enterprise license and AR Cloud enabled.
"Local Spaces" are locally stored and created on your device. "Shared Spaces" are shared in the cloud, and can be created from the Enterprise Console. Select the mortarboard (graduation cap) icon in the lower-left corner of the UI to learn more about Spaces.
Mapping a Space
When creating a local or shared space for the first time, you will need to map the space. For tips and advise on how to best map a space, select the mortarboard icon. Some tips for mapping:
- Some materials are harder to scan, black, glossy, or glass objects may be difficult to scan
- While scanning your space, keep in mind where specific tasks are performed - you may want to spend more time scanning those areas for precise content placement or occlusion
Mapping
Prior to Magic Leap OS 1.8.0
To begin mapping, slowly rotate in 360 degrees (this is called a "rotational scan"). As you rotate, a percentage indicator will increase. When that indicator is at 100%, you'll be prompted to continue the process. If you have fully rotated and aren't at 100%, look at the colored lines beneath the percentage indicator - they'll transition from red to green as the scan completes. If a section isn't fully green, stay in that position a little longer.
Repeat this process by walking up to the different "+" markers you see in the space. When you're satisfied with your scan, select "Finish Scanning".
Magic Leap OS 1.8.0 and Later
With Magic Leap OS 1.8.0, improvements have been made to the mapping process.
Upon selecting "New Local Space", you'll be shown the below guide on best practices.
The scanning process has changed. Upon beginning a scan, you'll see an interface like below:
Scanning is now done by approaching blue circles that appear in the space around you. When you approach a circle it will change to a ring and, once scanned it will make a popping sound. As you do, a meter on the bottom fills up. As the meter increases, the color will change from red to yellow to green.
Once your scan is at a sufficient quality, select "End scan". If your scan quality is good, you'll see a save prompt, like below.
If you're saying a shared space, your prompt will look slightly different.
If your scan isn't good, you'll be prompted to refine your scan before saving, should you choose.
Scanning Menu
Selecting the hamburger icon (the icon with three lines stacked vertically), opens the menu. From the menu, the following options are available:
- Tutorial: Enables or disables the Tutorial prompts shown at the beginning of the scanning process
- Guided Hints: Turn guided hints and voice-overs on or off, assisting you in your scanning process
- World Mesh: Enables or disables a mesh overlay a top the physical space
- Dollhouse: Enable or disable a dollhouse style 3D mesh preview of the mapped space
Export a Space
Starting with Magic Leap OS 1.8.0, you can now export a mapped space to a .glb file. On the spaces list, select the three dots icon to find the export option. Exported files can be retrieved via Magic Leap Hub.
